“At the moment he is undergoing an exploratory laparotomy to release the intestinal adhesions and rebuild the abdominal wall,” the DF Star hospital in the country’s capital announced in the medical bulletin.

Bolsonaro, 70-year-old, was transported to Brasilia in a medical plane from a hospital in the city of Natal, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, where he had been admitted since Friday after suffering severe abdominal pains while fulfilling an agenda as part of a political tour.

The new medical bulletin noted that Bolsonaro was subjected to “a clinical and surgical reassessment” and new laboratory tests and imaging that showed a persistence of intestinal obstruction, despite treatment received on his first day of hospital admission.+

At a pre-transfer press conference, the medical team of the hospital in the north of the country mentioned that the possibility of surgical intervention depended on the “response of the organism” to the treatment administered and that the decision was in the hands of the medical center in Brasilia.

For his part, Bolsonaro wrote this Saturday in his official account of X that his state of health continued to be “stable”, although he stated that “probably” will have to undergo surgery “either in Brasilia or in São Paulo”.

After the hospitalization of Bolsonaro, figures in the Workers’ Party, such as Humberto Costa and the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, highlighted the importance of the Unified Health System (SUS) as a national asset, stressing that the former president benefited from this system which he tried to dismantle.

They stressed the role of SAMU 192, a service of the SUS created by Lula, in national emergency care and recalled that most Brazilians depend exclusively on the SUS for medical treatment, It is recognized worldwide for its universal and free access.

Earlier this March Bolsonaro was formally accused by the Prosecutor of led and encouraged illegal actions to stay in power and try to overturn the results of the 2022 elections in which Lula was victorious and stay in power.

According to the accusation, the plot resulted in a violent invasion by followers of the ultra-rightist leader of the headquarters of the Supreme Court, the Congress and the Presidency on January 8, 2023, just days after Lula’s inauguration.
