On Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified that the BRICS countries have no plans to create their own currency as an alternative to the dollar.

“There is no discussion within BRICS about creating a common currency. It has not been discussed, and it is not being discussed. BRICS is focused on developing new joint investment platforms to facilitate investments in third countries, mutual investments, and so on,” he said.
During his daily press briefing, Peskov responded to a question about U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats against BRICS countries if they were to replace the U.S. dollar.
The Kremlin spokesperson stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin had already addressed this issue and called on the experts surrounding Trump to “better explain the BRICS agenda to him.”
On Thursday, however, the U.S. president reiterated strong tariff threats to deter BRICS from moving away from the dollar.
“The idea that the BRICS countries are trying to move away from the dollar, while we stand by and watch, is over. We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency nor back any other currency to replace the mighty U.S. dollar, or they will face 100% tariffs and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. economy,” Trump.
“They can go find another sucker nation. There is no chance that BRICS will replace the U.S. dollar in international trade, or anywhere else, and any country that tries should say hello to tariffs and goodbye to America!” the U.S. president warned.
BRICS is an intergovernmental association founded in 2006, which held its first summit in 2009 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Currently, this economic bloc consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
