California Health Authorities Confirm H5N1 Avian Influenza in Raw Milk Sample

The news comes shortly after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a case of avian influenza in a child in Alameda, California.

California health authorities have confirmed the detection of the H5N1 avian influenza virus in a sample of raw milk from Raw Farm, a Fresno producer, according to the Los Angeles Times. This sample was collected by officials from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.
In response to this situation, Raw Farm has issued a voluntary recall of all dairy products in one-quarter gallon packages produced on November 9, with an expiration date of November 27.
No diseases associated with contaminated milk have been reported so far.

This case is significant because it represents the first recorded infection of a minor in the country.
Although the child is recovering, the exact source of his exposure to H5N1 has not yet been identified, although contact with infected animals and raw milk has been ruled out.
