The police are investigating the circumstances of the incident to identify and apprehend those responsible for this crime. The Russian Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case for “attempted murder and public safety violations.”
The injured are a man and his wife, who link the attack to the position held by the victim. The car’s owner is a colonel in charge of one of the departments of the Russian General Staff.
The explosive device, with a power equivalent to around 500 grams of TNT, was planted under the driver’s seat. Authorities are considering different theories, including the possibility that Ukrainian intelligence organized the attack.
In a video posted on Russian social media, the driver is seen approaching the car, placing a package on the back seat, and then taking his seat, after which the vehicle explodes. The footage also shows neighbors immediately coming to the aid of the injured.
Immediately after the explosion, people in the vicinity rushed to help the driver and the passenger. The injured man took off his shirt and used it to bandage his legs before the ambulance arrived.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov avoided pointing to any suspects when asked about the incident in his daily press briefing, noting that it was necessary to wait for the investigation’s results.
