The Secretariat of Caricom coordinates the procurement of supplies to mitigate the needs of the Cuba’s people in the midst of U.S. imperialist sanctions.

The Caribbean Community (Caricom) on March 24 initiated extensive preparations for a significant humanitarian aid shipment destined for Cuba, reaffirming the enduring bonds of solidarity that unite the Caribbean nations with the country.

This decisive action seeks to mitigate the urgent needs of the Cuban population, which continues to face severe challenges due to intensified unilateral coercive measures and ongoing global logistical complexities.

The formal announcement was made by Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis and current chairman of Caricom, during the 50th Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government, convened in his nation. The decision reflects a strong regional consensus on the necessity of providing tangible support to Cuba in the face of the U.S. reinforced pressures, amidst the 6-decades of economic, commercial and financial blockade.

Operating under this established framework, the Caricom Secretariat is diligently coordinating the acquisition of critical supplies on behalf of member states. This strategic approach ensures that the aid directly addresses the most pressing needs of the Cuban people, directly impacted by what Caricom leaders frequently refer to as imperialist sanctions and the compounded difficulties of global supply chains.

The initiative underscores Caricom’s unwavering commitment to regional cohesion and mutual support, embodying the principle that “Our North is the South.”

The comprehensive cargo is slated to include a wide array of essential items, carefully selected to strengthen various sectors within Cuba. Among the critical provisions are basic foodstuffs, crucial for household sustenance and nutritional security. These include substantial quantities of powdered milk, vital infant formulas, beans, wheat flour, rice, and diverse canned goods.

In addition to food supplies, the shipment will also encompass essential health inputs. These basic medical supplies are designed to reinforce the island’s robust public health system, which, despite external challenges, continues to serve its population and extend medical cooperation across the world. Furthermore, the aid package recognizes Cuba’s commitment to sustainable development, incorporating vital resources for energy transition and infrastructure resilience. These include solar panels, batteries for energy storage, and water tanks, all critical components for enhancing the island’s self-sufficiency and mitigating the effects of climate change and infrastructure strain.

The collaboration highlights a collective rejection of isolationist policies and firmly reaffirms the will of the Caribbean Heads of Government to work cohesively as a bloc, championing stability, prosperity, and the well-being of their respective peoples.

The mobilization of these critical resources further reinforces Caricom’s long-standing position against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba. It also pays homage to Cuba’s historical role as an exemplar of medical and educational solidarity throughout the Caribbean region and beyond, reciprocating a legacy of aid that has benefited numerous neighboring nations for decades. The initiative thus serves as both practical assistance and a symbolic gesture of unwavering regional solidarity.
