CARICOM Leaders to Discuss Digital Skills Commission at 48th Summit

March 3, 2025 Hour: 8:04 pm
The 48th Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM will focus on advancing the region’s digital resilience, including discussions on the establishment of a CARICOM Digital Skills Commission.
Following last July’s meeting, where leaders approved the Strategic Framework for Regional Digital Resilience 2025-2030, this initiative aims to guide digital transformation across CARICOM economies and build a regional digital economy.
Jennifer Britton, Deputy Programme Manager for ICT Development, highlighted the critical role of digital technology in regional integration.
She hopes the discussions will address challenges in digital development, particularly in telecommunications and digital skills training.
Britton stressed the need for high-level policy guidance on issues such as 5G and 6G implementation, with telecom providers arguing that a business case for these technologies is lacking.
“This conversation has to happen at all levels—political, technical, and with the public,” she said, urging Heads of Government to prioritize digital development in policy discussions.
She also emphasized that digital technology should be integrated into all regional development strategies and not seen as a separate sector.
The summit, hosted in Bridgetown, Barbados, runs from February 19 to 21, 2025.
