In a significant development for the region, Qatar’s Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, has confirmed that a ceasefire agreement has been reached between the Palestinian movement Hamas and Israel.
During a press conference held on Wednesday in Doha, Al Thani announced that the implementation of this agreement will begin next Sunday, January 19.
“There will be mechanisms to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and address any violations that may occur,” Al Thani explained, underlining the importance of effective monitoring to maintain peace in the region, which will be carried out jointly by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States.
In addition, the Qatari Prime Minister indicated that details of the later phases of the agreement will be provided once the first phase of the ceasefire is completed.
“The agreement will bring peace, and the responsibility now rests with the parties,” he said, stressing the need for commitment from both sides.
The U.S. has also expressed its support for the agreement. President Joe Biden announced that the ceasefire guidelines are based on a plan established in May 2024 and added that his administration will begin a “major operation for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.”
With this agreement, tensions in Gaza are expected to ease, and a new stage toward peace is opened, although success will depend on the fulfillment of commitments by both sides.
