The number of deaths from severe floods in Chad during the past month has risen to 145, while nearly a million people have been affected, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

“According to the Chadian authorities and (humanitarian) partners, more than 964,000 people have been affected by these floods as of 25 August 2024,” said OCHA in its latest report on the situation in Chad, sent to EFE this Wednesday.

More than 250,000 hectares of arable land and over 70,000 houses have been destroyed, while 29,000 head of livestock have been crushed.

Floods have affected the country’s 23 provinces, with the most affected being Mayo-Kebbi East, Tandjilé and Mandoul in the south; Salamat and Sila in the south-east; and the capital, N’Djamena, in the south-west.

The OCHA also warned that “the assessment of the intervention capacities of humanitarian and development partners shows that they can only provide assistance to less than 10% of those affected”.

“Most of the affected persons left their homes to go to transit or shelter centres. Some of these transit centres are school establishments and should be available in a few weeks before the start of the school year,” the agency stressed.

Chad is one of the countries most affected by heavy rainfall in West and Central Africa during the first two months of the rainy season.

Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic (CAR), Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Niger and Mali have also been hit.
