Chad: Floods Leave at Least 64 Dead During August

The governor of Tibesti stated that it is impossible to reach all affected areas at this time to bring humanitarian aid.

The authorities of the African nation of Chad announced that 64 children have died as a result of flooding caused by heavy rains in the country so far this month.

According to the governor of Tibesti (north-west) province, general Mahamat Tochi Chidi, the floods have hit a total of six departments in that region, killing more than 60 people.

Tochi Chidi also said that «more than 300 businesses have been washed away by the rain (…) We ask the state and the oenegés to help».

In this regard, he stated that it is impossible at the moment to reach all affected areas to bring humanitarian aid.

The Minister of Social Action, Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs, Fatimé Bukar Kossei, announced on her Facebook account that she is launching «an aid plan to be implemented immediately».

Meanwhile, weather experts indicate that the rains will continue in the coming days and report that in the last week, only in Tibesti have been recorded 600 millimeters of rain.

According to the United Nations (UN), 246,883 people have been affected by floods in Chad, of whom 5,286 have had to leave their homes. Rainfall and flooding also damage access to food, roads and livelihoods.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned in the first two months of the rainy season countries such as Chad, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Niger and Mali have been affected by the rains, which have so far left 699 people injured and 72 dead.
