Chad: Munitions Depot Explodes and Kills at Least 9 People

According to health minister Abdelmadjid Abderahim said 46 people were in an “extremely serious” condition and that the death toll could increase.

On Thursday, at least 9 people were killed and several dozen injured in a munitions warehouse explosion in Chad.

The incident was triggered by a fire in the vicinity of the depot, where the world was affected by the fire and caused several explosions, as reported by the Chadian chancellor and official spokesman,  Koulamallah Abderaman.

According to health minister Abdelmadjid Abderahim said 46 people were in an “extremely serious” condition and that the death toll could increase.

After the fire, several shells and cartridges which did not explode, detonated once the fire was extinguished, releasing another chain of explosions.

Uncontrollable situation

President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno visited several hospitals and expressed his concern for the victims.

“Peace to the souls of the victims, sincere condolences to the grieving families and a speedy recovery to the wounded,” the president wrote in a Facebook post.
