‘Chile cannot favor an electoral option within a sister country for mere ideological or geopolitical considerations,’ they stated.

On Tuesday, observers urged the Government of Chile to respect Venezuelan institutions and the results of the July 28 elections in which President Nicolas Maduro was re-elected to lead his country for the 2025-2031 term.

“We call on the Government of Chile to respect the democratic institutions of the State of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and to recognize the will of the Venezuelan people clearly expressed at the polls, as 8 of the 9 opposition candidates have done,” the observers stated.

“Chile cannot become a country whose foreign policy does not respect the sovereignty and institutions of other countries,” they added, emphasizing the need to respect the National Electoral Council.

“Chile cannot favor an electoral option within a sister country for mere ideological or geopolitical considerations, as seems to be inferred from the statements of Foreign Affairs Minister Alberto Van Klaveren,” the observers emphasized.

“The Chilean Foreign Affairs Ministry should adhere to our international policy, which promotes respect for international law, the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples,” they stated.

Previously, the Chilean diplomat Van Klaveren asserted that the results of the Venezuelan presidential elections presented by the Venezuelan government are not “transparent.”

The observers described his statement as completely erroneous since “it was not the Venezuelan Government that provided the electoral results but the National Electoral Council, which is a completely autonomous branch of the Venezuelan State according to the current Constitution.”

On July 28, the Venezuelan presidential elections were monitored by Chilean observers such as the Center for Research on Latin American Aesthetics (CIELA), the United Federation of Transport, Port, Fishing and Communication in America (FUTAC), and the Chilean Communist Party-Proletarian Action (PC-AP).

Also participating as observers were the Allendista Socialism Movement of Chile, the Bicentennial Union of the Peoples UBP-Chile, the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR), and human rights defenders.
