On Friday, China confirmed the death of at least 6 Chinese citizens after an attack by armed militias in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on an African mine where Asians were working.

In addition to those killed, another group of Chinese and Congolese workers is missing.

The site of the attack was in Ituri in the north-west of the country, where a gold mining center owned by a Chinese company is located.

At a regular press conference, Beijing Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said efforts were being made to find missing Chinese citizens.

“We demand that the Democratic Republic of the Congo prosecute the perpetrators as soon as possible and punish them strictly in accordance with the law,” he added.

Mao also called on the DRC to “take measures to strengthen the protection of Chinese citizens and businesses in the area”.

Attacks on mining sites and convoys are common in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are not the first in which Chinese citizens are affected.
