‘I was subjected to an arbitrary action by Ecuadorian immigration officials,’ former VP candidate Diego Borja said.
On Wednesday, former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa denounced the existence of an immigration alert against at least 100 members or supporters of the Citizen Revolution movement.

This list is believed to be part of the political persecution that President Daniel Noboa’s administration is using to intimidate opponents after the presidential elections held on Sunday.
According to the Citizen Revolution leader, the list was given to the airport immigration police personnel with the following instructions: “Please be vigilant. Notify discreetly. Notify the supervisor in charge. Review all alerts.”
“The list even includes our campaign strategists. One of them, who was returning to Argentina, was searched and abusively detained for two hours,” Correa said.
Previously, Diego Borja, who was the vice-presidential candidate alongside Citizen Revolution’s presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez, denounced that immigration authorities attempted to detain him at the land border while he was traveling to Colombia.
“In an incident as outrageous as it is illegal, today I was subjected to an arbitrary action by Ecuadorian immigration officials at the Rumichaca international bridge, while my wife and I were registering our departure from Ecuador to then proceed with entry into Colombia to spend the Easter holiday in that country,” he said.
“Without any court order, without any explanation, and with absolute arrogance, they tried to deprive me of my freedom. They took away my national ID card and attempted to detain me. My ‘offense’ has been being the Citizen Revolution vice-presidential candidate, something I am very proud of. My ‘offense’ has been defending a political project that has always believed in social justice, wealth distribution, sovereignty, and dignity,” Borja emphasized.
“Today, like thousands of my fellow citizens, I have felt firsthand the weight of a State that persecutes instead of providing protection and intimidates instead of engaging in dialogue… This is not the first arbitrary act, nor is it the only violation of my rights and security… The threats must stop,” he added.
