Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced on Friday the establishment of a high-level dialogue on migration with the new US government, led by President-elect Donald Trump. In her statement, Sheinbaum emphasized the defense of the rights of Mexicans in the U.S. as a priority for future negotiations.

During her speech, the Mexican leader stressed the importance of Mexicans for the US economy and emphasized that the bilateral dialogue will seek to establish “joint strategies” that address both the concerns of the US government and the needs of Mexico.

The fight against arms trafficking from the US, as well as collaboration on security and migration issues, are crucial points in this agenda.

Sheinbaum also addressed the issue of potential mass deportations, assuring that her government already has a strategy in place to address this situation.

She also announced that measures are being implemented to support Mexicans returning to the country, ensuring their access to social programs and employment opportunities.

The president emphasized that migration is mostly a matter of necessity and not a choice. Therefore, she reaffirmed the importance of working together with other governments in Central and South America to promote development in the countries of origin of migrants. This strategy seeks to provide employment and decent conditions that deter people from leaving their homes.

Sheinbaum also mentioned a recent virtual meeting with Under-Secretaries from several countries, where a dialogue was initiated to strengthen this comprehensive development cooperation strategy. The initiative has been well received by other leaders, including the president of Honduras, suggesting a regional approach to addressing migration challenges.

This statement marks a significant step forward in the relationship between Mexico and the US, especially in a context where migration remains a hot topic on both countries’ political agendas.

Mexico’s willingness to collaborate and negotiate represents an attempt by the Mexican government to proactively manage migration and protect its citizens abroad.
