Arreaza called for respect for the democratic and popular will of the Colombian people and to neutralize this attempted institutional and oligarchic coup d’état’ against the government of President Petro.

On Wednesday, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP) reiterated its denunciation of the attempted coup d’état against Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

The executive secretary of the Latin American integration mechanism, Jorge Arreaza, made this known the day before on his Telegram account, in view of the events that took place the day before in the neo-Granadian country and denounced by the head of state.

Arreaza also called for respect for the democratic and popular will of the Colombian people and to neutralize this attempted institutional and oligarchic coup d’état’ against the government of President Petro.

He recalled that on 13 September, ALBA-TCP issued a communiqué warning of ‘the latent and imminent risk of a coup d’état in Colombia’, based on a series of allegations made by the president himself.

The text pointed out that throughout this year, Latin America and the Caribbean ‘have been the scene of innumerable attempts at destabilisation’, through continuous attacks on the institutions of several countries and direct threats against popular leaders and democratically elected political leaders.

He then alerted the international community to the execution of ‘a planned and induced strategy, coordinated by de facto powers, both external and internal’, with the aim of disrupting peace and prosperity in the region.

The bloc pointed out that from the first day of his mandate, the oligarchy that for decades governed Colombia tried to corner Petro to prevent him from carrying out his sovereign and progressive project of government that seeks to achieve the peace and human development that the Colombian people so long for and deserve.

He stressed that in this context, the allegations made by the Colombian president represent a latent and imminent risk to democracy and Colombian society.

Petro denounced the day before that the Colombian National Electoral Council (CNE) is trying to take away the political rights of the 11.5 million people who voted in the 2022 presidential elections.

He warned of the beginning of a coup d’état and asserted that the CNE can never, nor does it have the power to investigate the President, ‘this is the beginning of the coup d’état’, he insisted.

In the opinion of the dignitary, presidential immunity was violated and the rule of law and respect for the popular vote and democracy were broken.

He stressed that they are trying to take away the political rights of the people who voted for him and ‘Petro because he does not shut up, because he speaks the truth, even if I am wrong many times, and I try to ensure that there is justice in this country and that poor people have a place’.
