Colombia: Armed Conflict Victims Receive Compensation

The first of the deliveries took place in Riosucio, where 432 victims were compensated with an investment of seven thousand 173 million (close to one million 800 thousand dollars) from the national budget.
On Wednesday, the Colombian government is set to complete the delivery of 11.2 billion pesos (approximately two million 800 thousand dollars) in judicial compensation to victims of the armed conflict in the northwest of the country.

These reparations, which on this occasion are being delivered to the inhabitants of Riosucio (Chocó) and Turbo (Antioquia), are part of the compensation ordered by the Colombian state to repair the damages suffered during the war.
According to the Victims’ Unit, these compensations are included in the sentences handed down by Justice and Peace against Fredy Rendón of the Elmer Cárdenas Bloc and Rodrigo Zapata of the Southwest Bloc, former members of the paramilitary organisation United Self-Defence Forces of Colombia (AUC).

This action, according to the declarations of the director of the Victims Unit, Patricia Tobón, represents one of the largest judicial compensations carried out in the municipality.
The official also highlighted that during this government 520 reparations payments have been made in that locality, surpassing what has been done by previous mandates in a decade.
“We know that what we are going to give the victims is insufficient compared to what they have experienced. But we hope that this compensation will contribute to the projects they are building to address the damage and harm caused by the armed conflict,” said Tobón.
