In the context of growing violence and tensions in the region, the Colombian Army has decided to deploy nearly 300 troops in Catatumbo, a strategic area in the northeast of the country.
This measure responds to the recent clashes between the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which have left a tragic toll of several peace signatories and civilians killed.
Major General Giovanni Rodriguez, commander of the Second Army Division, explained in a video that the deployment is aimed not only at conducting military operations but also at strengthening defensive capabilities at military bases in the region.

The peace process faces significant obstacles. The ELN has accused the government of President Gustavo Petro of violating the agreements established at the Dialogue Table, questioning the state’s will to achieve a lasting peace.
In this regard, Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed on his social media account that the threatened population and peace signatories residing in the region are being evacuated with the support of the Colombian Army.
According to the governor of Norte de Santander, William Villamizar, more than 30 people have died, while the number of wounded exceeds 20.
The situation in Catatumbo is particularly delicate, as this area has historically been a bastion for illegal armed groups and a critical point in the Colombian armed conflict.
The current situation has led the peace delegations of the Colombian government to demand an immediate cessation of hostilities from the ELN and the FARC dissidents.
