Colombia: National Assemblies For Social Reforms, Peace and Unity Kicks Off

At the National University of Bogota on Saturday started a National Assembly with the aim of strengthening popular power and supporting the social reforms take on by the president Gustavo Petro’s government.

The event will gather more than seven thousand leaders and activists and referents of social, student, peasant, trade union and indigenous organizations, and has on its agenda the balance of the first two years of government, the approval of social reforms based on rights, and peace-building through national dialogue.
Petro, who met with the assistants at the inaugural day, highlighted the importance of the meeting to design strategies for social coordination and mobilization at the time he said the assembly will consolidate the popular support after the attempts to overthrow him through judicial persecution.
In addition, the assembly seeks to stay as a regular practice to gather all the political parties and alliances of the ruling coalition “Historical Pact” in the face of 2026 presidential elections.
During the meeting, the conclusions of the 25 previous regional assemblies will be presented and a road map for local, regional and international mobilization will be defined in order to promote the social transformations that the country demands.
The event will close with a political act in which President Petro will again participate, thus consolidating popular support for his administration and attempts at destabilization.
The assembly, organized by workers unions, and the “Historical Pact”, is expected to conclude on Sunday.
