Colombia: Three Massacres in One Day, 9 Killed Including 3 Minors

Three individuals were murdered and their bodies were left on a court located in a rural area of the municipality of Playa de Belén, in the department of Norte de Santander, in northeastern Colombia according to the Institute for Studies on Development and Peace (Indepaz) in a statement released this Saturday.

With this, there have been 53 massacres that have occurred in Colombia this year, according to figures from the NGO Indepaz.
The community residing in the Aratoque village in the municipality of Playa de Belén found the bodies of the three murdered men in the middle of a local soccer field. So far, the residents claim that they were not from the area, and their identities have not yet been confirmed.
Furthermore, according to the report from Indepaz, the Ombudsman’s Office has issued a report stating that, in light of clashes between armed groups, fundamental rights of the civilian population may be vulnerable, leading to serious violations of International Humanitarian Law.
In the municipality of Playa de Belén, in May 2021, two police officers were injured: patrolmen Cristian Camilo Álvarez Ruiz and Hugo Hernando Calderón Sábalo.
The injured officers were initially taken to Isabel Celis Hospital, where the process to stabilize them began. However, Álvarez Ruiz died there from a wound to the abdomen, due to an attack with rifle shots carried out by four men against the local police station.
In addition, In the early morning, three minors were murdered inside a house in the Villanueva neighborhood in the Puerto Olaya district, municipality of Cimitarra, Santander said Indepaz.
North Santander is facing an alarming wave of violence, with two new massacres reported today, bringing the total to 52 across Colombia in 2024. Of these, 6 have occurred in this department, resulting in 19 victims. In Cúcuta, 3 massacres have been recorded this year.
The Ombudsman’s Office has issued 11 early warnings since 2020, highlighting the risk scenarios in the region. The situation demands an urgent and effective response from the Government, according to reports from Indepaz.
