Petro invited all countries of the world to “put aside greed that is killing human beings and mother earth” and take a step towards total peace.
The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, denounced that in the United Nations (UN) only the nations that have the power of destruction are heard, and not the countries that ask to unite human effort for existence.

During his speech at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Petro stressed that a country’s power is no longer exercised according to the type of system, political or economic, but by the power to destroy humanity.
The Colombian head of state pointed out that one percent of humanity is the one who allows it to commit genocide in Gaza, Lebanon or Sudan, or economically block rebel countries, which do not fit into its domain as Cuba or Venezuela. “One percent of humanity needs to show their power of destruction to the remaining 99 percent of humanity, so that they can continue to direct the power of the world, appropriating and accumulating more and more wealth,” he said.
Similarly, the president referred to the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, when he said that the rich are “those who say what is thought, what is said and what should be forbidden and silenced”.
“In their power of prohibition and censorship they shout ‘Long live freedom, fuck it’, but it is only the freedom of the richest 1 percent of the world’s population that in its mercantile and free feeling leads us to the destruction of the atmosphere and life,” he said.
In that sense, he said that “in this room, the communication ability of a president depends on how much dollars he has in his budget, how many warplanes he has and in the bottom line on how much his country can destroy humanity”.
Regarding nations that do not have and do not exercise this power of destruction, the Colombian president stated that “we speak without much attention and often perhaps only for our own people, that is why we are not heard when we vote to stop the genocide in Gaza, although we are the majority of the world presidents and representatives of most of humanity, They don’t hear us”.
Petro added that “if we ask for the debt to be swapped for climate action, they don’t listen. If we ask that wars be abandoned in order to concentrate on the rapid transformation of the world economy so as to save life and mankind, they are not listening either”.
He also said that the current context has become more acute, since “today things are worse than a year ago, 11 million hectares of the Amazon rainforest have been burned in just one month due to global warming and the climate crisis”.
Petro recalled that scientists predicted that if the Amazon forest burned, we would reach a point of no climate return where human decisions to stop the collapse will already be harmless.
“A year ago, I called for a peace conference on Palestine to be held here without even the first bomb having exploded. Today we have 20,000 children killed under the bombs and the presidents of countries of human destruction are laughing in these halls”, he said.
The leader further stated that the control of humanity, on the basis of barbarism, is under construction and its demonstration is Gaza and Lebanon. «When Gaza dies, all mankind will die».
Similarly, he argued that there is a reason for this Armageddon of the contemporary world, in the nonsense of governments who applaud genocide and do not act soon to change economies towards decarbonization, there is a logic, which is not in the political world, nor in this lectern where all the presidents speak, the logic is out and it’s called social inequality.
