Rains and landslides also caused damage throughout the city, flooding homes and roads.

The number of people killed by floods and landslides in recent weeks has risen to 24 in the city of Abidjan, the most populous in Côte d’Ivoire, authorities said.

Also, the National Civil Protection Office (ONCP) indicated that two people are missing, so the number may be higher.

He also pointed out that the remaining «victims», more than 570, were taken to a safe place.

The agency also detailed that, since June 13, there have been 72 «cases» of flooding of roads, 18 in homes, while more than a dozen buildings are at risk of collapse.

Informal settlements are the most vulnerable due to poor rainfall drainage between houses that are often built without complying with regulations.

The rains hit the territory almost two weeks ago and generate an increase in the water level so the country’s authorities asked the population to stay in a safe place.
