Colombian President Gustavo Petro has requested the protocol resignations of his ministers and directors of administrative departments this Sunday, in a move aimed at restructuring his cabinet amid a growing political crisis.
This decision comes after a controversial meeting of the council of ministers, broadcast on television and social media, in which Petro expressed his dissatisfaction with his team’s failure to fulfill campaign promises.
Through his account on the social media platform X, the president announced: “I have requested the protocol resignations of ministers and directors of administrative departments. There will be some changes in the cabinet to achieve greater compliance with the program mandated by the people.”
This announcement follows a six-hour session last week in which Petro openly criticized his collaborators and defended the controversial appointment of Armando Benedetti as head of the Presidential Office, who faces accusations of corruption and misconduct.
The situation has led to several immediate resignations. The Minister of Labor, Gloria Inés Ramírez, was the first to submit her “irrevocable resignation,” thanking the president for allowing her to work on a “political agenda in favor of millions of workers.” Her departure was followed by the resignation of the Legal Secretary of the Presidency, Paula Robledo, and the Minister of Environment, Susana Muhamad, who had accompanied Petro during his tenure as mayor of Bogotá.
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Interior, Juan Fernando Cristo, had previously proposed the resignation of the entire cabinet, describing it as “unsustainable” following the tensions generated in the council of ministers. However, he remains in his position for now.
Attention now turns to the changes the president will make and how these will impact the direction of the government in the coming months.
