In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Cuban leader asserted that “imperialism continues its efforts to economically suffocate Venezuela and harm its people by targeting its strategic natural resources.”
“In the face of this new Yankee aggression, we express our full solidarity and renewed support for our sister nation, led by President Nicolás Maduro,” Díaz-Canel wrote, emphasizing that Cuba, “true to its history of resistance, remains at the forefront of denouncing imperialist abuses.”

In response, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil publicly thanked Díaz-Canel’s remarks and reiterated that the US measure seeks to “intimidate the peoples of the world.”
“On behalf of President Nicolás Maduro, we express our deepest gratitude to our brother President of Cuba for his unwavering solidarity,” Gil stated. “This action exposes the mercenary nature of the US government, but it will not stop us in our struggle for sovereignty and prosperity.”

The controversial measure announced by Donald Trump would impose 50% tariffs on nations importing Venezuelan crude oil—a strategy analysts say aims to economically suffocate Nicolás Maduro’s government and force political change.
Venezuela, which holds the world’s largest oil reserves, has seen its production plummet to historic lows due to Western sanctions. However, countries like China, India, and Turkey have maintained energy trade with Caracas, which could now be affected.
