Trump Considers Sending Undocumented Migrants to Guantanamo Base
The President of the Republic and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, has reported on his X account the recent intentions of the United States government to use the controversial Guantánamo Naval Base for the detention of migrants who will be deported.
Díaz-Canel described this action as an act of “brutality,” stressing that the base is on Cuban territory that has been “illegally occupied” by the United States.
The Cuban leader expressed his concern about the decision of the new U.S. government, which plans to imprison thousands of migrants in Guantánamo, a facility that has been criticized for its history of human rights violations and its association with practices of torture and illegal detention. “It will place them next to the well-known prisons of torture and illegal detention,” Díaz-Canel added in his publication.
Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, also spoke on the issue on the same social platform. Rodríguez Parrilla emphasized that the U.S. government’s decision “shows contempt for human dignity and international law.”
He also recalled that the naval base is outside the jurisdiction of U.S. courts, adding an additional level of legal and moral complexity to the situation.
The statements from the Cuban leaders reflect a growing concern about the treatment of undocumented migrants and the use of facilities associated with human rights violations in a context where relations between Cuba and the United States remain tense.
The use of Guantánamo for this purpose has been strongly rejected by the Cuban government, which considers these actions a violation of its sovereignty and the fundamental rights of migrants.
