“We attended the Mass offered in Havana Cathedral for the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who with humility, moral authority, and wisdom called for an end to aggression, blockades, and unilateral sanctions against any country anywhere on Earth,” Rodriguez posted on the social media platform X.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel also participated in the mass honoring Francis, the first Latin American pope. The Catholic Church’s Supreme Pontiff visited Cuba in September 2015 and February 2016, when he met with the Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, Kirill, in Havana.

During Thursday’s homily, Antoine Camilleri, apostolic nuncio to Cuba, emphasized that Pope Francis “was not only the Holy Father of Catholics but also a father to all without distinction,” especially to those who live in difficult situations.

Due to the Pope’s death, the Cuban leader proclaimed an official day of mourning until midnight on April 24. The island’s authorities emphasized Pope Francis’s intervention in the “improvement of relations” between Cuba and the U.S., urging Washington to abandon its sanctions against the Cuban people.
