Civil Defense Issues Alert for Hurricane Oscar’s Potential Impact Hurricane in Eastern Cuba.
During the early morning hours, Hurricane Oscar exhibited slight fluctuations in intensity. Its maximum sustained winds are currently at 130 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts, maintaining its status as a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
At six o’clock this morning, the center of the hurricane was located at 21.0 degrees north latitude and 73.2 degrees west longitude, placing it approximately 130 kilometers northeast of Punta de Maisí, the easternmost tip of Cuba, and 240 kilometers east of Punta Lucrecia in Holguín.
Additionally, it is estimated that the transit through Cuban territory will take about 24 hours, moving at a very slow speed. This slow movement increases the risk of rain and flooding, along with wind impacts expected to be between 85 and 100 kilometers per hour.
Oscar is predicted to move west and west-southwest over the next 12 hours. Today, it will traverse the seas north of the eastern region, heading toward the northern coast of Guantanamo and Holguin in the afternoon.
Reports indicate that it may make landfall in Cuba this evening along the northern coast in the provinces of Guantanamo and Holguin.
As the hurricane approaches the island, wind speeds are expected to increase, reaching between 85 and 100 kilometers per hour, with even higher gusts anticipated. These winds are expected to reach hurricane strength primarily in these two provinces.
