UNRWA Reaffirms Commitment to Palestinian Refugees Despite New Israeli Laws
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced the Israeli government decision to ban the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The minister explains that this decision severely compromises the delivery of humanitarian aid and basic services to the Palestinian population, labeling it as part of a “genocide” against the Palestinian people, carried out with the complicity of the United States.
Rodríguez expressed his concern on the social media platform X, stating that the ban on UNRWA activities and the blocking of contacts with its authorities will exacerbate the crisis in Gaza. He also noted that this measure is part of a broader context of impunity and systematic violence against Palestinians.
For his part, Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA, warned on January 30 that the implementation of the Israeli law banning the agency’s operations would be “disastrous.”
In an address to the UN Security Council, Lazzarini emphasized that this decision will increase instability and deepen despair in the occupied Palestinian territories at a critical time for the region.
He highlighted that UNRWA is essential for supporting a population that is already in extremely vulnerable conditions.
Lazzarini also warned about the long-term consequences of this measure, pointing out that the fate of millions of Palestinians is at stake, as are the prospects for a ceasefire and a political solution that could ensure lasting peace and security.
Tensions escalated when Danny Danon, Israel’s representative to the UN, gave UNRWA a 48-hour ultimatum to evacuate its centers in Jerusalem. This order is based on laws passed by the Israeli Parliament last year, which aim to ban the agency’s activities in the territory.
Israel’s decision has been widely criticized by the international community, which sees this move as yet another obstacle to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a worsening factor in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
UNRWA, which has been providing vital assistance to Palestinian refugees for decades, now faces an unprecedented challenge that could leave millions of people without access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and food.
In a context of rising tension and violence, the ban on UNRWA’s activities not only jeopardizes the stability of the region but also calls into question the role of the international community in protecting human rights and pursuing a just and lasting solution to the conflict.
