Cuba’s foreign minister has reaffirmed his country’s support for Argentina’s “legitimate right to exercise sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Sandwich, and South Georgia Islands, as well as their surrounding maritime areas.”
The message, shared on social media by Bruno Rodríguez, comes amid criticism of Argentine President Javier Milei, who—during a memorial event for Veterans and Fallen Soldiers of the Falklands War—stated that “The Malvinas were, are, and will be Argentine. But we must also respect the islanders’ wishes.”
The Cuban foreign minister’s declaration emphasizes that “geographical proximity and political affinities cannot surrender sovereign rights to hegemonic and imperialist domination interests,” suggesting a clear stance against British influence in the region.
This show of support from Cuba comes within a historical context marked by the Falklands War, which took place between April and June 1982, resulting in the deaths of 649 Argentine and 255 British military personnel.
The sovereignty dispute over the islands remains a contentious issue in Argentine politics, with Buenos Aires repeatedly condemning London’s refusal to engage in dialogue on the matter. Cuba’s intervention in this debate highlights not only its solidarity with Argentina but also its opposition to what it sees as imperialist interests in the region.
This exchange of statements underscores the complexities of international relations in Latin America, where historical issues like the Falklands dispute can have significant repercussions on regional politics and strategic alliances between nations.
