Writers and artists from the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) gathered to support the “My Signature for the Homeland” movement and defend Cuba’s sovereignty against U.S. aggression and the blockade imposed by that country for more than six decades.

The event was attended by the Minister of Culture, Alpidio Alonso Grau, representatives of the Government and the Party, Uneac directors, and members of the organization.

The Cuban artists’ union highlighted on Twitter that UNEAC ratified its support for the ideals of the Cuban Revolution and its rejection of media campaigns and destabilizing coercive measures, and that the participants signed in support of the unity of the Cuban people against external interference, emphasizing that each signature represents the defense of peace, dialogue, international solidarity, cultural identity, and the nation’s social project.

The poet Nancy Morejon, National Prize for Literature, said, “this is a genuine testimony that deserves to be known, because there is no greater right for a human being than to express themselves,” while the painter Lesbia Vent Dumois says that anyone who feels Cuban cannot miss this call.

For her part, Marta Bonet, president of Uneac, ratified that “we make good use of the shield of artistic creation and we walk with combat weapons at the ready in case it is necessary to use them to preserve peace and national independence.”

Bonet added that the process of collecting signatures serves for Cubans to ratify their unconditional love for the Homeland and the right enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic: to defend it against any threat.

Bonet, also a prominent Cuban musicologist, recalled that, as we commemorate the 65th anniversary of the proclamation of the socialist character of our Revolution, we share the disposition to defend the Homeland against threats and foreign interference.

“Our signature for the Homeland is also a tribute to his nobility, to his deep conviction that a united, dignified people, willing to overcome any adversity, is invincible,” said Uneac’s head, referring to the year of the centenary of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.

Marta Bonet concluded a meeting where the commitment of culture to the defense of the homeland was reaffirmed, highlighting that culture will continue to be the “shield and sword of the nation,” as Fidel defined it.
