Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez has strongly condemned the recent confiscation of a plane belonging to Venezuela’s state-owned oil company (PDVSA) by the United States at Santo Domingo airport, Dominican Republic.

Díaz-Canel described the act as a “flagrant robbery” and a demonstration of “disrespect for international law” by the U.S. government.

The aircraft, a Dassault Falcon 2000EX, was seized under accusations of violations of sanctions and export control laws.

This incident follows another similar occurrence in September when the U.S. confiscated another Venezuelan aircraft that was undergoing maintenance in Dominican territory.

The Cuban President interpreted the confiscation as an act of “modern piracy” and a reaffirmation of the Monroe Doctrine, which can be interpreted as a form of neocolonialism.

The situation has generated a climate of diplomatic tension in the region, with Venezuela and Cuba denouncing what they consider aggressive and illegal actions by the United States.
