Cuba’s Eastern Provinces on Alert for Possible Heavy Rains

Cuban General Staff of the Civil Defense decreed this Saturday the “information phase” for provinces of the eastern zone of the island due to the possible heavy due to a trough that will leave intense rains on that region, severely affected by Hurricane Oscar.

Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Granma, and Las Tunas are the provinces that according to the Civil Defense note are under “information phase”, the first of four stages that the Cuban authorities set up to deal with natural disasters.

According to the Meteorological Institute’s Forecasting Centre, a trough in the Atlantic Ocean, which extends into the vicinity of the Lesser Antilles and the seas north of Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, is generating clusters of activity that cause showers, Rain and thunderstorms, which are approaching the eastern end of Cuba.

“This situation, together with the instability generated by the large low pressure zone located in the southern Caribbean Sea, will increase cloudy with showers, heavy rains and electric storms from today on in the provinces of the eastern region,” stated the Nationwide Civil Defense.

In this regard the anti-meteorological disaster organisation “guides” the population to keep informed through national media and official social media profiles and comply with the instructions given by local authorities and Civil Defence.

The organisation said the rest of the provinces and the Special Municipality of the Island of Youth must be attentive to the development of this hydrometeorological situation.

Currently, the province of Guantánamo, located in the far east of Cuba, is recovering from the severe impact of Tropical Storm Oscar as provisional damage report from authorities includes at least eight fatalities, damage to over 11,000 homes, and significant impacts on agriculture, roads, electricity services, communications, and water supply, as well as isolated communities and swollen rivers, among other issues.
