U.S. Removes Cuba from the List of Countries Sponsoring Terrorism
Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, spoke on Wednesday about the U.S. government’s recent decision to remove Cuba from the list of states that Washington considers as sponsors of terrorism. Rodríguez described this measure as “serious, important, and in the right direction,” although he also described it as “very limited and late.”
During a press conference, the Cuban Foreign Minister stressed that Cuba’s previous inclusion on this list “lacked credibility,” although he acknowledged that its effects on the financial sphere have been “extraordinary” and harmful to the Cuban population. He stated that these actions were designed to “cause harm to Cuban families.”
In addressing the reasons behind the change in U.S. policy, Rodríguez Parrilla suggested that President Biden made this decision because of the failure of his strategy toward Cuba.
“The ultimate goal of defeating the Revolution has failed,” he said, arguing that the measures imposed sought to cause economic and social collapse in the Caribbean country.
The minister also criticized U.S. policy toward Cuba as “obsolete” and “failed,” noting that it lacks support not only among Americans but also among Cubans residing in the United States. Despite the current economic difficulties, Rodríguez Parrilla assured that the Cuban people’s support for the Revolution and the constitutional order remains firm.
Emphasizing the need for more significant changes, Rodríguez Parrilla urged the lifting of the economic blockade imposed on Cuba, while reiterating the country’s willingness to engage in respectful and equal dialogue with the United States.
“Our willingness to hold a dialogue remains intact,” he said, stating that this message will be repeated to the next U.S. administration.
Finally, the Minister of Foreign Affairs warned that the “economic war” continues to be the main obstacle to the development and recovery of the Cuban economy, which also contributes to a high human cost for the population and stimulates emigration.
