With 80% of the polling stations counted, González, president of the NPP and current commissioner resident in Washington, gets a total of 315,700 votes, or 39,38%.

González Colón will become, if this trend is confirmed, the second elected governor of the island after Sila Calderón (2001-2005).

Second, with 31.05%, is Juan Dalmau, leader of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) and candidate for the governorship of the Alianza de País, composed by that party and the Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana (MVC).

Followed by Jesús Manuel Ortiz, of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD), with 22.09% of the vote, and Javier Jiménez, of Proyecto Dignidad (PD), with 6.47%.

Although a more close contest was expected between González and Dalmau, the latter already marks a milestone by placing second, being the first time that it is achieved by an independentist candidate who does not belong to either of the two major parties: the NPP and the PDP, who have alternated in power for decades.
