The powerful storm has also injured 768 people and affected over 622,000 residents, causing extensive damage across northern provinces.
The cyclone struck Mozambique on December 15, bringing winds of up to 260 km/h (160 mph) and delivering 250 mm of rainfall within the first 24 hours. It initially impacted Cabo Delgado province before moving inland to Niassa and Nampula, regions that are frequently hit by cyclones.
Severe Impact on Education and Healthcare
The effects of Cyclone Chido have severely impacted Mozambique’s already fragile education and healthcare sectors. More than 109,000 students have been affected due to significant damage to schools, while 52 healthcare facilities have become inoperable, disrupting access to essential medical services in areas that were already underserved.
Prior to reaching Mozambique, Cyclone Chido had already devastated Mayotte, a French territory in the Indian Ocean. While Mayotte experienced its worst storm in 90 years, Mozambique is now facing a worsening crisis exacerbated by climate change.
