Cyclone Chido Devastates Northern Mozambique: More than 45 Dead and Thousands Affected

Cyclone Chido has left a trail of destruction in northern Mozambique, with at least 45 people killed and 503 injured, according to the latest report by the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD).
The authorities have confirmed that approximately 263,000 Mozambicans have been affected by this natural phenomenon, which made landfall last Sunday.
INGD President Luísa Meque described the situation as “chaotic” during an emergency committee meeting in the city of Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado province, which has been hit hardest by the cyclone.
Of the 45 fatalities, 37 occurred in Cabo Delgado, particularly in the Mecúfi district, where public and private infrastructure has been severely damaged, leaving many without roofs. The provinces of Nampula and Niassa also reported human losses, with five and three deaths respectively.
In an even more alarming scenario, Meque warned that numbers could increase as more assessments are conducted in affected areas.

After hitting Mozambique, Cyclone Chido advanced toward Malawi, where at least two deaths and more than 8,000 people have been reported to be affected. Local authorities are working to assess the damage and provide assistance to those impacted.
Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations and international governments are mobilizing resources to help affected communities in Mozambique and Malawi in an effort to mitigate the impact of this natural tragedy.
