Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone warned that the combination of strong winds, low humidity, and extremely dry vegetation keeps the fire threat at a “very high” level.

Local authorities confirmed today that the number of fatalities from the devastating forest fires in the region has risen to 24. Of these, eight deaths are attributed to the Palisades fire, while 16 are a result of the Eaton fire, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

The Palisades fire, which has become the largest active fire in the area, has consumed more than 23,700 acres (approximately 96 square kilometers) and destroyed more than 5,300 structures since it began last Tuesday. Currently, this fire is contained at only 11 percent.

The Eaton fire has swept through more than 14,100 acres (about 57.1 square kilometers) in the vicinity of Altadena and Pasadena, achieving a 27 percent containment level. So far, more than 12,300 structures have been destroyed in this disaster.

The situation is critical as more than 100,000 people are being evacuated from various affected areas, which in total cover over 40,000 acres (approximately 161.9 square kilometers).
