In a statement, the Public Prosecutor’s Office indicated that Vásquez, along with former deputy head of the military institution Venancio Cervantes and former commander of the Special Operations Command Carlos Roberto Puerto, has been presented with a “fiscal injunction” for assuming responsibility for the “crimes of homicide and serious injuries” against citizens Isis Obed Murilo and Alex Roberto Zavala.
The text details a violent incident in which Murillo was shot in the head during a peaceful demonstration near Toncontín airport, while Zavala suffered serious injuries from shots fired by Honduran soldiers.
The investigations of the Public Prosecutor’s Office described the military actions as “brutally disproportionate”, highlighting the indiscriminate use of M16 rifles against demonstrators.
These actions are said not to have been isolated acts but crimes ordered by high military commanders. “These actions, which resulted in deaths and serious injuries, were not isolated acts but crimes carried out by elements of the armed forces under direct orders from the then Joint Chiefs of Staff, the deputy chief and the director of special operations”
The Public Prosecutor’s Office reaffirms its commitment to combat impunity and defend human rights in Honduras.
