The charges, which could carry a combined sentence of up to 72 years in prison, underscore the dangerous role that unchecked technology can play in enabling exploitation, particularly the abuse of women and children.
The charges include complicity in drug trafficking, complicity in the possession and dissemination of child pornography, complicity in the corruption of minors, and aggravated pimping. The director’s arrest and subsequent charges came as a result of an investigation into the activities of users on the Coco.gg platform, highlighting the company’s failure to implement adequate oversight.
The director, who was arrested on Tuesday, appeared before a judge today. While the judge granted him provisional release under judicial supervision, it included a hefty bail of 100,000 euros and a prohibition from leaving French territory.
The website itself was shut down on June 25 during the investigations, with its two servers located in Germany, and its domain name seized.
The Coco.gg platform was infamously used by Dominique Pelicot to connect with dozens of men who then participated in the repeated rapes of his wife, Gisèle Pelicot. Dominique Pelicot drugged his wife into unconsciousness to facilitate the assaults.
The Pelicot case gained international attention, with the trial culminating in December, resulting in the convictions of 51 individuals to prison sentences.
