Displaced Sudanese families are returning to Omdurman, west of Khartoum, to observe Ramadan, as the city shows signs of recovery following nearly two years of war.
A City Reclaimed
- Omdurman was recently retaken from Sudanese paramilitary forces, allowing displaced residents to return.
- Many, like Awad Zayed, found their homes severely damaged, with bullet holes, debris, and destruction marking the aftermath of the conflict.
Gradual Return to Normalcy
- Daily life is slowly improving, as roads reopen and supply routes stabilize.
- Local markets are regaining normalcy, with food prices dropping.
- “Every day, people return to their homes, and life is gradually returning to normal,” said local resident Yousef Abdul Qader.
Humanitarian Efforts
- Charities are stepping in to support returnees.
- Gaith Abdul Qader, who runs a community kitchen, noted that while Omdurman was nearly empty last year, his team now feeds dozens daily.
Military Advances Against RSF
- Sudan’s military continues to gain ground against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
- Military forces are advancing into Greater Khartoum, aiming to retake key government institutions.
- The conflict, which began in April 2023, has displaced millions and killed tens of thousands.
As Sudan’s military consolidates control, Omdurman’s recovery offers a glimmer of hope for thousands returning to rebuild their lives.
