Voices could still be heard inside the nightclub calling for help, COE Director Mendez said.

On Tuesday, Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) confirmed that the collapse of the roof of a nightclub in Santo Domingo left 27 people dead, 120 people injured, and an undetermined number of individuals trapped beneath the rubble.

The nightclub, which is very popular for its Monday night parties and frequented by local celebrities, was packed with hundreds of people while the well-known Dominican merengue singer Rubby Perez was performing. Perez is currently being searched for.

COE Director Gen. Juan Manuel Mendez said that voices can still be heard inside the nightclub calling for help, which is why rescue workers will continue operating until those individuals are located.

Dozens of ambulances and units from the COE, the National Police, the National Emergency and Security Response System 9-1-1, Fire Department, Civil Defense, and the Ministry of Defense have been deployed to the site of the disaster. Authorities fear the death toll may rise in the coming hours.

President Luis Abinader and several cabinet ministers visited the nightclub, where family members of those who were at the party have gathered in hopes of learning the fate of their loved ones. “All emergency response agencies have provided the necessary assistance and are working tirelessly in the rescue efforts,” he said.
