The U.S. president, Donald Trump, has overturned 78 decrees signed by his predecessor, Joe Biden. Among the most prominent decisions, Trump announced the immediate withdrawal of the U.S. from the Paris Agreement on climate change, which he described as “unfair” and “unilateral.”

During a ceremony at the White House, Trump signed new executive orders that reorient federal policy in various areas. One of his first actions was to order federal officials to return to their offices, ending telework that had been implemented during the pandemic.

In addition, the president pledged to eliminate policies and regulations that he said have contributed to rising inflation in the country during 2024.

The new president also revoked initiatives related to the promotion of racial equity and support for marginalized communities. This includes the elimination of measures against discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation, as well as protections for health and safety at work.

It also dismantled programs designed to promote educational equity and economic opportunities for the Hispanic population.

This step is not new; during his first term (2017-2021), Trump had already pulled the U.S. out of the deal, which became effective in 2020. The reinstatement of the U.S. under Biden was seen as an attempt to restore American leadership in the fight against climate change.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the United Nations (UN), stressed the importance of the U.S. and its partners in the World Bank continuing to be a model for environmental issues, highlighting the global impact of U.S. policy in this area.

Trump, who officially assumed office as the 47th president of the U.S., will govern for a four-year term, and his initial decisions suggest a clear approach toward deregulation and reversing progressive policies implemented by the previous administration.

These actions anticipate a period of intense political divisions and debates about the future of the environment and civil rights in the United States.
