Dozens of people were killed and others injured when a military plane crashed into a residential area near a military airport in Omdurman, Sudan.

The accident occurred late Tuesday night when the aircraft collided with a populated area close to the Sayyidna Valley military airport.

According to reports, 46 people lost their lives, including a high-ranking military official who was on board the plane. The Sudanese army confirmed that “several military personnel and civilians were killed” but did not provide additional figures.

Among the deceased was General Bahir Ahmed, a prominent commander in Khartoum who had previously served as the head of the army across the capital.

Military sources indicated that a technical failure is the most likely cause of the crash.

The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns within Sudan’s military aviation sector amid escalating conflicts and political instability in the country.
