Dominican authorities warned on Monday that the national territory will be affected by the impact of rains related to tropical storm Ernesto, which is strengthening in the Atlantic.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warning about Ernesto detailed that Air Force hurricane hunters are investigating the system, while the phenomenon is still far from the Lesser Antilles, The Civil Protection agencies of the Dominican Republic are attentive to his trajectory.
“Tropical storm conditions and heavy rains are expected in parts of the Leeward Islands late tonight or early Tuesday,” NHC said, while tropical storm warnings were issued for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
They also noted that the phenomenon continues to move rapidly westward, while meteorologist Fermín Estévez stressed that, “If we follow that path by Tuesday night, we will be receiving rains, mainly towards the northeast and southeast and gradually increasing towards the Gran Santo Domingo and the center of the National District”.
According to the latest report, the weather system was 700 kilometers east-southeast of Antigua and 1.175 kilometers east-southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a rolling speed of 43 kilometers per hour and maximum winds of 55 kilometers per hour.
Reports include forecasts of seven and nine foot waves from Punta Cana (province La Altagracia) to the province María Trinidad Sánchez, with a cumulative rainfall for four days between 100 and 150 millimeters, mainly from Gran Santo Domingo the eastern part of the national territory, such as La Altagracia, La Romana, El Seibo, Hato Mayor and others.
