DR: President Reiterates Decision to Change the Constitution

Before his re-election on 19 May, Abinader assured that the constitutional reform he intends to promote only seeks to prevent the perpetuation of a ruler in power in the country as the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo did.
On Tuesday, Dominican President Luis Abinader reiterated his determination to reform the constitutional text regarding the limitation of presidential re-election to prevent the perpetuation of a ruler in power.

The president made these declarations in La Semanal con la Prensa, when questioned on this issue, which has been rejected by sectors of the opposition, opposed to stopping indefinite re-election.
Abinader assured that from 16 August, when he will have a majority in the National Congress, he wants to leave a legacy of putting a “padlock” on the Constitution with the aim of limiting the possibility of modifying it for his own benefit, unlike his predecessors.
He assured that he will govern until 2028 and will not run for another election seeking a third term in office, while he considered that there are people in the country who are prepared to lead the nation and “govern as well or better than me”.
“In our party (Revolucionario Moderno) there are several who can do as well or better than me, and that is the worst thing that can happen (to the country), that it is believed that there is an indispensable person, here there are no indispensable people,” he said.

He defended the need to place “a padlock” on the Constitution, so that no president, regardless of the majority he has in Congress, can change the terms of election to more than two terms.
