The driver of the truck loaded with rocks that allegedly caused the tragic multiple accident in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, resulting in the deaths of 41 people, turned himself in to authorities on Monday.
The news was confirmed by the federal government’s news agency, marking a significant development in a tragedy that has moved the country.
The man, who had been on the run since the incident that occurred early Saturday morning, appeared at the police station in the municipality of Teófilo Otoni, accompanied by his lawyer, with the aim of giving a statement.
According to regional police, the driver had faced previous legal problems; in 2022, his driving license was confiscated after he refused to undergo a breathalyzer test.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck was overloaded, which could lead to serious criminal charges against the driver. The main line of investigation suggests that one of the granite blocks being carried by the truck broke off and collided with a bus traveling in the opposite direction, which was carrying 45 people.
This impact triggered a devastating fire that took hours to extinguish, complicating the identification of victims due to the carbonization of their bodies.
In addition to the initial collision, another vehicle that was driving behind the truck was also involved in the accident, leaving its three occupants with serious injuries, according to reports from the Fire Department.
This accident, which took place on a curved stretch of federal highway BR 116, is considered one of the worst road tragedies in recent history in Brazil.
The magnitude of this tragedy has generated deep national mourning and revived debates on road safety and cargo regulations in the country.
