Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 2,719

The military junta in power in Myanmar raised the death toll to 3,354 on Saturday following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the country on March 28. The numbers are being updated as rescue teams continue clearing debris and searching for the missing in six regions declared under a state of emergency.

According to a report in the state-run newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar, the armed forces have also registered 4,850 injuries and 220 missing persons. Over the past week, rescue teams, including at least 16 international groups, have saved 653 people trapped under rubble.

Tom Fletcher, the UN’s head of humanitarian services, described the situation in Myanmar as “overwhelming devastation.” The UN has labeled the disaster’s scale a “major unknown,” emphasizing urgent needs for thousands of survivors facing shortages of clean water, medical supplies, and adequate shelter.

The quake primarily affected the north-central region, with Mandalay and Sagaing as the hardest-hit cities. International rescuers have highlighted challenges in accessing some areas due to collapsed roads, bridges, and buildings.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates 17 million people affected, including 9 million in critical conditions near the epicenter across 57 municipalities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a high risk of cholera outbreaks among survivors, a bacterial disease spreading due to poor sanitation and lack of clean water.

In Bangkok, where the most significant impact outside Myanmar was reported, authorities confirmed on Friday that no survivors have been found among nearly 80 workers trapped in a collapsed skyscraper under construction, in addition to 22 confirmed deaths.

The situation remains fluid as rescue and humanitarian efforts intensify in a country facing an unprecedented crisis.
