Peru is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where more than 80 percent of the world’s seismic activity occurs.

In the early hours of Friday, a magnitude 7 earthquake caused a power outage in the Arequipa region in southern Peru. Fortunately, only 9 people sustained minor injuries.

A Civil Defense representative in Arequipa reported that nine slightly injured individuals were treated at the Health Ministry’s hospitals and have already been discharged.

The damage to homes was also not severe. So far, authorities have only recorded some collapsed walls in the cities of Chincha and Yauca, which are near the earthquake’s epicenter. Although a bridge was affected by the quake, residents are using alternative routes to travel between regions.

The damage report also included power outages for over 3,500 users in Chincha, restricted sections of highways, and the suspension of school classes in the province of Caraveli.

The text reads, “Peruvian Prime Minister reports that the earthquake caused damage but no victims.”

The Peruvian Navy issued a tsunami alert as soon as the earthquake occurred. At 4:46 AM, however, the alert was canceled because no hazardous waves had formed.

“The entire cabinet is on alert to assist those affected. We hope that no victims emerge during the aftershocks,” said President Dina Boluarte, who is on an official visit to China.

The magnitude 7 earthquake occurred at 12:36 AM local time off the coastal district of Yauca. Peru is located in a region known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, where more than 80 percent of the world’s seismic activity occurs.

The last devastating earthquake in the country occurred off the coastal city of Pisco in August 2007, when a magnitude 7.9 quake struck that area and the entire southern region of Ica, resulting in over 500 deaths and millions in infrastructure and housing losses.
