The 7.7-magnitude quake was also felt in Thailand, where the seismic movement also caused buildings to collapse.
On Friday, Marie Manrique, the coordinator of the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), stated that key infrastructure in Myanmar had been affected by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in the northwest of the country, which was followed minutes later by another earthquake measuring 6.4 in magnitude.

“One of the most important things to understand is that not only are buildings with cracks and fissures affected, but also that there are public buildings and structures that have collapsed. This includes roads, bridges, and public buildings,” she said.
So far, authorities have confirmed the collapse of the main bridge connecting Mandalay with Sagaing, the town closest to the center of the country, “which will pose a major logistical challenge” in reaching the population of the latter.
The IFRC representative explained that Sagaing is located in an area severely affected by Myanmar’s internal conflict, which in recent years has involved the military and several irregular armed groups. For this reason, it is home to the largest number of displaced people in the country.
Manrique also noted concerns about a large dam that is being monitored to assess its condition. “We are currently working with very limited information. As we progress, we will better understand the extent of the damage,” she said.
“However, we can imagine that the impact will be quite significant and that the situation will be worse for highly vulnerable people due to the prolonged crisis in the country,” the IFRC commented.
The powerful 7.7-magnitude quake was also felt in some Chinese provinces and in Thailand, where the seismic movement also caused buildings to collapse. Authorities in that country declared the capital city of Bangkok an emergency zone and are deploying teams to save dozens of people believed to be trapped under the rubble of an under-construction high-rise in the city, CNN reported.
