Ecuador: A Weekend of Violence Claims 27 Lives

The weekend of November 29 to December 1 was tragic for the coastal province of El Oro, Ecuador, where at least 27 people were killed in a series of violent incidents. The city of Machala and surrounding cantons, such as El Guabo, Pasaje, Huaquillas, and Zaruma, became the scene of a wave of crimes that authorities attribute to disputes between organized crime groups.
The most devastating massacre occurred early on Sunday in El Guabo, where an armed group attacked a house, killing 10 people, mostly foreigners who had arrived days earlier. Five bodies were found inside the building, while four others were found in the street. In addition, a dismembered body was discovered one kilometer from the attack site.
The violent events were not limited to this massacre. The day before, a 19-year-old boy identified as Josué Ullaguari was killed while dining at a cevichería in El Guabo. Two men on a motorcycle broke into the establishment and shot him.
Additionally, Óscar Santiago Rodríguez, 32, was killed by two men on a motorcycle in downtown Machala. Other murders that day included Ricardo David Moreira Nieves and Josué Andrés Espinoza Vivar, who were attacked by individuals on motorcycles in Pasaje.
On Saturday, November 30, another attack took the life of Vinicio Ricardo Zari Ríos, a bricklayer who was shot multiple times from a moving car in the Luz de América neighborhood south of Machala.
In Huaquillas, Cristian Medardo Masache Condolo was intercepted and killed by armed men in broad daylight.
