‘We’ll be watching closely how the elections unfold and also to defend democracy,’ the Citizen Revolution leader said.
On Sunday, Citizen Revolution candidate Luisa Gonzalez exercised her right to vote in the second round of elections in which she is challenging Daniel Noboa for the presidency of Ecuador.

Surrounded by hundreds of supporters, the 47-year-old leftist lawyer voted in Canuto, the rural town where she grew up in the province of Manabi. Gonzalez called on security forces to refrain from interfering in the electoral process so that democracy may prevail.
“I call on the public forces not to intervene for or against, but rather to properly guarantee democracy. Not to intervene in the vote count at the polls, but to guarantee the security of the Ecuadorian people, who are already at their limit,” she said in statements to the press after casting her vote.
The Citizen Revolution candidate confirmed that many political forces, ranging from the right to the left, are united behind her to ensure that the election results are respected, which could be threatened by President Noboa’s declaration of a “state of emergency” yesterday.
“Only in times of war has Ecuador united as much as it has today… We will be watching closely how the elections unfold and also to defend democracy,” Gonzalez said.
“This ‘State of Emergency’ violates a mandate of the Constitutional Court and our rights. They are declaring a State of Emergency when political parties are united in the computing centers receiving voter registration records. We will be ensuring that democracy is guaranteed,” she explained.
